A substantial antique 9ct gold brooch set with a large polished banded agate cabochon, full of natural colour and character. The stone displays sweeping layers of chestnut, amber, honey, cream and deep brown, creating an almost landscape-like pattern that changes noticeably as the brooch is turned.

Banded agate has been used in jewellery since antiquity, prized for the unique natural patterns formed as successive layers of mineral-rich silica developed within the stone. It became particularly fashionable in Victorian and Edwardian jewellery, where each piece was valued as much for the individuality of its markings as for the precious-metal mount surrounding it.

Here, the oval cabochon is framed by a warm 9ct gold mount with a finely twisted rope border. The restrained setting allows the agate to remain the focus while giving the brooch a pleasingly substantial, well-made appearance.

The reverse has a traditional long pin fitting and is stamped 9CT. A safety chain and pin are also included.

At approximately 30mm × 35mm and weighing approximately 12.3g, this is a generously sized brooch with enough presence to wear on a jacket, coat, scarf or heavier fabric.

The brooch has been professionally inspected but deliberately not highly repolished, allowing the natural patina and character acquired over its long life to remain intact. It is in good wearable antique condition, with age-related surface wear visible in the photographs.
