I’m Robert, an independent jeweller on Bayham Road. I repair and restore rings, chains and heirlooms by hand. If you’re unsure what your piece needs, bring it in or send a photo — I’ll treat it like it belongs to a close friend and recommend the best and most economical option.

Ring Resizing

Precise sizing in gold, platinum and silver. The join is blended and polished so it’s invisible, with the original finish reinstated.

  • Traditional soldering and finishing; stretching after proper annealing when the design and metal allow — a cheaper, safe option
  • Patterns/engraving matched where possible
  • Typical turnaround: 1–2 weeks (no same-day service)
How long does resizing take?

Most rings are ready within 1–2 weeks depending on metal, stones and patterning. I don’t offer same-day repairs — time and care give longer-lasting results.

Do you ever use a ring stretcher?

Yes — after annealing and only where the band thickness and design make it safe. It keeps the band strong and can be more economical than adding metal.

Can you resize platinum or engraved rings?

Yes. Platinum needs higher heat and careful finishing; engravings/patterns can usually be blended or restored discreetly.

Every ring gets a free professional check: settings tightened, claws assessed, and care tips to prevent future damage.

Replating & Restoring White Gold

Instead of the usual thin rhodium layer, I apply a platinum-based finish for a tougher, longer-lasting white that resists rapid wear. Long-lasting

  • Deep clean & polish before plating for proper bond
  • Settings checked; claws re-tipped if needed
  • Typical refresh cycle: 2–3 years depending on wear
Why not rhodium?

Rhodium is bright but very thin and can wear in months on high-contact areas. A platinum-based finish is thicker and more durable, with a subtle, premium white tone.

How long will the plating last?

With normal wear and proper prep, most pieces look their best for 2–3 years before needing a refresh. Heavy daily wear may shorten this — I’ll advise honestly when I see the ring.

Can you plate non-white-gold jewellery?

Yes — most gold and silver items can be finished after appropriate prep. I’ll test compatibility first so the result is even and secure.

If a polish alone will restore the look, I’ll recommend that instead — the least-invasive option is usually best.

At Ketch Fine Jewellery, we take on almost any repair – from a broken clasp or snapped chain to ring resizing and stone resetting. We work in all precious metals (gold, platinum, silver, palladium) and can often carry out simple fixes on much-loved costume jewellery too.


We’re always upfront about pricing and will give you a clear quote before any work starts. As a guide:

• Ring resizing from £60

• Stone resetting (e.g. a diamond centre stone) from £70

• Clasp or chain repairs £60–£90 (gold)

• Simple quick fixes (laser welds, jump rings, quick polish) minimum charge £40

• Re-plating (durable 3-micron finish) from £70

Most simple jobs (like small soldering or clasp fixes) can be done within 24 hours – often the same day if you bring it in early. More complex work (such as full stone resetting or extensive rebuilding) is normally completed within two weeks. We’ll always confirm the turnaround time when you get your quote.

You’re welcome to drop in or send your jewellery by post. An appointment isn’t usually necessary — just give us a quick call beforehand to make sure Robert is in the workshop. We can also arrange secure, insured postage if that’s easier for you.
